WORKERS' COTTAGES

At the Petone Borough Council meeting last evening the Mayor, Mr. J. B. M'Ewan, referred to the fact that the Government had recently increased the rent payable by tenants of the . Petone workers' cottages, and, according to press statements, had sought' to justify the increases by, the usual landlord's plea of an increase in rates. r He had noticed the statements, and desired to protest against such a plea- being put forward. The rents had been increased by Is, and the rates over a period of seven years had increased by only 5 2-13 d per week. In 1910 the rates were £2 13s, and in 1917 £3 15s 4d, which represented an increase of 5 2-13 d per week. The increase of £1 2s 4d was more than accounted for by two special rates—tho sewerage rate, 17s, and the Hutt-road rate, 7s 6d—thus showing that on the other rates there had been an actual decrease of 2s 2d.
