HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLED

REPORT

The Department of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce has received the following cablegram, dated London, 15th September, 1917, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand. (Note.—Quotations, unless othenvise specified, are average market prices on spot.): —

Meat.—Owing to the continued small supplies of home-killed mutton and beef, maximum prices have obtained, especi-. tlly for home-killed mutton. All de- '■■ 1 scriptions of frozen meat, demand is in excess of supply. New Zealand mutton, per lb, B|d, ewe mutton Bid, Argentine mutton ll|d, N.Z. lamb lOd, Argentine i lamb ll^d; New Zealand beef, no. supplies available; Argentine beef, no quotations owing to -short supply. Small supplies realised about the beginning of this week, hinds 12Jd, fores 10|d. . Butter.—Market practically cleared. Only butters obtainable are Paris unsalted 212s to 217s per cwt; Argentine, 2065, unsalted 2095. Cheese.—Market continues firm. English Cheddar, per cwt., 1325; New Zealand, Canadian, and States at Government price 130s Bd. Hemp.—Manila: .No change to report. Output two weeks ending 9th September, 46,000 bales. New Zealand: Irregular. Prices have declined slightly in anticipation of Government action. Wheat.—-Government offerings are very small. Buyers are holding back awaiting 'Monday's lower price 6. Business has been done with third .grade Northern Manitoba 80s, No. 3 Red Winter, 77s 6d. ' ' . Oate.—Market quiet but firm. American 60s ex ship; Chilian, 63s 6d.
