Hei main dimension;; are :-Lcngtti, 207 ft; bneadtn, 25ft; and depth, 15ft. PERSONAL Mr. C. Demp3ter has signed on the Eegulus as second mate in place of Mr. C. H. King Mr. C. Ipsen, mate of the Wootton, has come ashore ' , .. Captain Byre lias taken command of the Kahika at Lyttelton, relieving Captain Robinson, 'Jho has gone to Dunedin for orders UNEXPECTED ARRIVAL Yesterday afternoon a totally unexpected arrival in Wellington harbour was the auxiliary schooner Huia (Captaln^Mackenzie). \The vessel anchored'near Shelly Bay; and it is Understood that en route from- Greymouth to Oamaru the engines broke down,-and it was deemed advisable to put Into port for repairs. With a load of timber for Oamaru the vessel left the West Coast port on' Sunday last AMERICAN SHIPPING • In their latest report Messrs. Mailler and Querean state that shipping matters in America are very unsatisfactory and unsettled at the present time., - So many steamers have .been requisitioned by the British Government, -and now so many more by the United States Government, that those left for commercial trade are very limited in number. Some vessels ] . which were loading foi New Zealand have been taken over, and have had to transfer theii cargo to other lines. . This has caused further advances in charter cost of steamers, and an; increased difficulty in securing vessels to load for any foreigu ports. . The outlook is very unpromising for the coming three or four months, and the fear is that there, will .be.a; great scarcity of tonnage'arid insufficient cargo space for merchandise. Undoubtedly freight rates will contiuue to advance. Owing to these conditions, the freight, rate that, up to the present time, has ruled at 42 dollars a ton, lias been" advanced to 52 dollars a ton iii vessels now loading antl to load in the immediate future, and intimations are given that even this rate will be higher within the next two months. It would appear'that this is an extreme rate, but as compared with those existing to other countries it is low, for at the present time the current rate to South American ports is 120 dollars per ton, while to South African portb they are 55 dollars to 65 dollars per ton. Australia and New Zealand apparently are more favoured than other countries in the matter of freight rates. . ' . ' ~ _ /THE ARAHUR.A' .".'■ - / As the Arahura is to have her boilers blown down she will miss a trip from Napier next Wednesday. Instead of going from Gisborne to Napier, as is usual, the vessel will return, to Auckland from the former port. The Arahura will leave Auckland in, her usual running on Saturday next The auxiliary scow Hazel Repton went into the stream from Miramar on Saturday last, and berthed this morning to load.for Lyttelton ..

On Saturday evening the Invercargill arrived, at Wanganui from Tar'nkohe with cement. The vessel returns to Tnrakohe to load more cement for Wanganui or New Plymouth '
