SEVERE WEATHER

HURRICANE IN ENGLAND

MUCH DAMAGE TO WHEAT CROPS.

(AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZBAMND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) , LONDON, 29th August.

A hurricane, sometimes attaining a velocity of a hundred miles an hour, swept 'the South of Englaoid and AVales for twenty-four hours. There were several wrecks in the Channel, where the worst August gales on record were experienced. Much damage was done to the fruit and wheat crops. Thousands of acres of wheat have been cut, but harvesting has been impossible for ten days. Th& shortage of-labour will make it 'impossible for many of the farmers to repair the damage by hand labour, particularly in the hop-fields. There are serious floods in Wales. The situation in Ireland, owing to the rains, is also serious.
