SECONDARY EDUCATION

A statement to the effect that at least 20 per cent, of the pupils attending State schoole in. the Wellington district never reached the Sixth Standard was made at to-day's meeting of the Education Board by the Chairman (Hon. J. G. W. Aitken) on the authority of the secretary, who had gone into the matter. The board had before it the report of the Director of the Technical College (Mr. W. S. La-Trobe) of the proceedings at the recent conference of directors and managers of technical schools. It decided to approve ffie proposal that primary education should cease when the pupil reached the age.of 12, and that he or she thereafter be compelled to attend a secondary school. General approval was expressed of the proposals of the Minister of Education designed to aiford to" youths who have not qualified for admission to junior free places an opportunity of further training after leaving school.
