BASIN RESERVE IMPROVEMENT

Satisfactory progress has been made with the Basin Reserve improvement scheme, and this area. already presents an appearance much, more creditable than formerly •to a reserve in the centre of the city. The erection of' the new close-boarded fence has been completed, and the outside border has now been planted with native shrubs and trees. In time these will screen the fence almost completely. Care has been token to make a good selection of native flora, several varieties being planted which are not often seen in the city beautification. There will be a narrow grass border and small grass plots near the ornamental tiled gate-ways. The strip of the old plantation which is to bo used for easing the tramway curves has in the meantime been laid down in. macadam. When rails are procured and the rest of the scheme can be completed the whole will be woodblccked, and the footpath will then he paved. Inside- the reserve there are sloping grass banks between the fence and the footpath.
