THE YPRES FRONT
GERMANS REPULSED NEAR
WESTHOEK
PORTUGUESE IN SHARP
FIGHTING
(Received August 16, 12.45 p.m.)
LONDON, 15th August.
Sir Douglas Haig reports : Our heavy artillery and rifle fire repulsed an enemy attack east of Westhoek. We have improved our positions on the right bank of the Stenebeke.
The Portuguese troops, after sharp fighting, repulsed raiders, estimated at three companies strong, east of Neuvo Chapelle.
Despite the enemy's aggressive tactics our long-distance aeroplanes reached and bombed their objectives and turned their machine guns on the infantry. •
