The light is a vast improvement on the old-fashioned flares. The plant, fitted by J. J. Niven and Co. comprises a petroldriven dynamo, consuming one- gallon of motor spirit every 12 or 16 working hours . It is now eighteen months since tha company's hulk Blackwall was fitted with a steam generating plant, which proved so satisfactory that the company decided to equip their otker vessel with electric light. Tho two hulks of the Blackball Coal Company are now as up-to-date as any m New Zealand THE HINEMOA'S MOVEMENTS The Hinemoa landed at Dog Island on Monday, and took the chief telegraph engineer on Tuesday to Centra Island, in order to examine a site for a wireless station. 'At a. meeting of the Victorian Marine Board on the 27th July, an application for examination for a mate's certificate was received from It. E. Keyes, a returned soldier, and formerly engaged on vessels trading between Australia and OceaD Island and other ports. The applicant stated that in 1912, when an apprentice on an overseas ship, he had deserted at Melbourne. Subsequently he had "been employed on other vessels for a period of ten months and a half. Towards the close of 1914 he had enlisted, and had served with the Australian Forces at the front. An apprentice deserting his ship is liable for two 1 years' additional service, but in the case in question the Marine Board,.taking Into consideration the fact that the applicant's conduct while serving on ihs steamers mentioned, and later as a soldier at tho war, had been very satisfactory, decided to allow him to sit for the examination. When this decision was reached Captain J. Little intimated that if Mr. Keyes was successful at bis examination, Captain Little's firm (Howard Smith, Ltd.) would find him employment, in view of the fact that the man was a returned soldier
