FIRE IN RUGBY-STREET

'* Shortly after 3 o'clock this morning ohe Firo, Brigade was summoned to suppress an outbreak (believed to be due to a defective chimney in a two-etoried house of seven hooms in Rugby-street, next the Basin Reserve, owned and occupied by Mrs. Margaret Fanner. A stiff wind which was blowing at the time made the work of the firemen very difficult. The house, which is insured in the State Department for £500, and the contents, which are covered by a policy in the National Office for £100, .were severely damaged.

"I'm afraid I can't make an order," smilingly remarked Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., when dealing with a judgment isummons case in the Magistrate's Court to-day. Tlie reason was that the judgment debtor is at present serving two years' imprisonment. "Then, sir, might I»ask you to adjourn the case sine die," put in counsel. " No, that is not allowed liy the regulations," replied his Worship. There was nothing left but to strike the case out.

•Recently some complaints have been made that certain posts on culverts on tie Rimutaka Hill-road constituted a danger to traffic. In his report to the Uutt County Council to-day, the inspector of works: (Mr. J. W. Cudby) denied this, claiming that they are more of a protection than a menace. : Neither did he hold with the suggestion that lengthening some of the culverts would add to the safety of tho road. :
