TERMS OF AGREEMENT
ARBITRATION TO FOLLOW.
The terms of the agreement arrived at are as follow : —
Eight men to be taken back at once, three as firemen and the rest as yardmen in .order of seniority, and in the meantime at the respective wages for the position now paid by the Wellington Gas Company; the other men to have preference in order of seniority up. to a period of six months from this date, the Minister of Public Works to find employment in* the City of Wellington or its neighbourhood for any of the men not taken back by the company; the following matters to be referred to arbitration by Mr. Justice Stringer, or, failing him, some other Judge of the Supremei Court : (a) the rate of wages to be paid to the retort hands; (b) the conditions of- labour in the retort-house'in.' connection with future employment.
Commenting upon the agreement, Dr. Prendergast Knight, Chairman of the! Gas Company, ■ said to a Post reporter that the conditions of arbitration, which were the main point, were offered to the men from the commencement.
