The Union Company has decided to give the service a month's trial in c.-der to find out whether or not the patronage given warrants its continuance. The 1 passenger accommodation in tha Mapourika last evening was poorly patronised, only ten saloon and four steerage passengers proceeding from Wellington. However the amount of cargo taken was more than any received last aumCaptain T. B. Seweil is in command, with the following officers .—Chief, Mr. C. D. McKinley; second, Mr. Jackson; third, Mr. Mitchell; chief engineer, Mr. Wicks; second. Mr. Bell; third, Mr. Douglas; purser, Mr. C. B. Madden WELLINGTON AGENCY FOE HOTJTO The -Wellington agency for the auxiliary schooner Houto has been accepted by Messrs. Dalgety and Co. The Houto is owned by the Iron and Steel Company of New Zealand, whoso -headquarters are at Dunedin. Well known as a good sailer the Houto has recently been fitted with gcandia engines burning crude oil. It is understood that the Houto will ' trade between Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin . . • •■.',■ PEESONAL Notice has been received of the-death at Tauranga of Mr. Horace Edgar White on 'the 28fch July, at the age 0f.54 years. Mr. White' was well known in Wellington, and was highly esteemed. In his earlier years he was chief steward of .the Mararoa, and later 'was the first licensee of the Esplanade Hotel, Devonport, after the new building was erected. •' "Upon leaving that hotel Mr. White went to , Whan»arei, and returned to Auckland to man- ■ ace the Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen's Club, a position which he held for seven years. Hel resigned on account of illhealth, and went to Tauranga,- where he opened a store on the Strand. For some time past Mr White's health had been failing. He is survived by a widow and family . Mr. C. Madden has signed on the Mapou- ] rika as purser, and Mr. Bell .as second en- \ gineer . ' Owing to> some minor repairs which it has been found necessary to effect to her boiler, the ferry steamer Duchess was withdrawn from the Eastbourne ferry service yesterday. &he will resume on Friday During the past month the total tonnage that'arrived at and departed from Wellington •was 169 272. For the month of July, 1910, the- tonnage was 254,232, there being, therefore, a decrease this year of 84,000 tons r, The Huia arrived at New Plymouth at 8 am. yesterday from Wellington. She left here at 7.20 a.m. on Sunday. The vessel apparently sheltered in the Sounds, as the weather at the Cape was too bad for small craft. She is to sail again for New Plymouth as soou as possible after arrival at Wellingtontins evening
