KELBURN AFFAIRS

RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION.

The annual meeting of the Kelburn Ratepayers' Association, held last night, was attended by aboiit twenty persons. Mr. F. Meadowcroft presided.

In moving the adoption of the annual report (already published) the Chairman "said the' association could' take to- itself credit that it had been able to' get- certain improvements made in the' district. One important question was the fencing: o£ precipitous sections. Although all owners had not done what" they should, nor ,been' forced, the association had exerted silent pressure to some extent. Nothing much had been done in the way of beautifying, but*they had taken under their wing the BeautifyL|g Society. Theyliad not taken over the society's liabilities, and front a letter in the paper he learned that some -gentlemen had- had to nwet • out of their own pockets a balance not covered by subscriptions received. It was wrong that that: should be so, and the association' might take the matter into consideration. . Regarding streetlighting, the association had approached the council on more- than one' occasion* to:have lights^ placed' on> the much-fre-, quented track across' the College Reserve, but as' that was not city property nothing: could be, done. Nor would the Council admit responsibility for the- lighting or improvement of the track from Rawhititarrace' to Kelburri-parade, as it was a drainage reserve. On the wholo, however,'they, considered that they had been' well treated by the* City Engineer, who had given courteous-xconßideration' to all their request's; Were' it not for shortage' of money and shortage of labour works now deferred would probably have jbeeii in hand before'this. - .'' \. , After discussion, the ■ report- ' and balance-sheet were adopted/ -v Officers were elected/ as follow i—President, Mr. F. Meadowcroft; deputychairnian, Mr. Hi Mainland y secretarytreasurer, Mr; •R. Sievers; committee, Messrs. J. A* Stewart, H. Mainland, R. E. Manley, G. B; Dall, J. F. Atkins, J. Orchiston, H. W. Mr. Lambert (Northland Ratepayer's) suggested that' the Kelbum*'Association 1 would be well advised to affiliate with the Greater Wellington Association. . The Chairman replied that the Kelburn/Association could not at present do so, since its rules precluded it from taking, any part in the nomination oi' return of candidates, which was one of the objects of the Greater Wellington Asso-ciation.-'lt was open, however, to any member to move to have the rule altered to permit of affiliation. . j-
