DENTISTS AT THE FRONT

, A New Zealand dentist now on service, one of the hundred who have been withdrawn for war service out of' the five hundred practising in New Zealand, takes exception to a statement' of' the. Minister of Public Health, with regard to the training of students in New Zealand. ;'. ■■■... ... '■.-, It eeems that since the inception of the Dental. School in Duhedin I>eiween 50 and 60 .students have entered, and one-quarter of that number have taken degrees',, the remainder being engaged in post-graduate work. Past students now on active service, include::— Brigadier-General B. C. Freyberg, V.C., D.5.0., Major Saunders, D.5.0..(8.D.5.), Capt. J. H. Don (B.DiS.), Capt.- ; Green (TJ.D.S.),, and Lieut. Turner . (8.D.5.). Lieuts. Bell, Rosei and Ryan, who are all ■ graduates, are serving in New Ze&land; as'alao are Mr. Rattray, B.D;S., and Mr. Hansen, B.D.S. Pte. M'Kenziej is with theA-M.R., and Sergt. (Jilmour has been' killediin action. TheYOtagb Dental School iteelf is represented by (the- following members of the staff, who are on active service:—Lieut.-Col, T. A. Hunterj ; Major H. P. , Pickerillj Capt. GJendenning, Lieut. Donaldson, and Lieut. Nicholson. . ' - ■ The Minister is alleged to have said that.only one student 'had presented himself for examination under tKe■Dentists. Act in six years. \ ■''. ;■■'..- LEICESTER SPORTS - MEETING. •'. The military: sports meeting. at Leicester on Saturday^.was a great success, and the local folk were pleased when the Leicestershire- Regiments won the Regimental Challenge Gup for the meeting. ' They were, however, only one point ahead of the New Zealand Machine Gun Corps, which won: the cross-coun-try race,, and. the tug-of-war—their superiority , in i both events being undisputed. ,- In the former the New Zealand men packed' so well that they had no fewer ; than six "in the; first 24, and several of them, when they finished 1, looked fit enough, for another journey. Their work in the tug-of-war was also remarkable for tfhe fact that they were never beaten in any one of the rounds or "final..- < . .' ' . .
The tug-of-war was regimental, eight a-iside. ' The, , M.G.C. (N.Z.) went through three rounds, and in the final beat another M.G.C. team by 2-0. .
Cross-country team race : Seventeen teams of twelve turned out. Distance, 7 miles by road., It was early noticed that'vthe New Zealand team, was shaping well; and not, as some competitors did, going all out at once. The first New Zealander to . finish was Private. Hollanxtby (eighth), with Private Hebden (ninth), L.-Opl. Akister (eleventh), and Sergeant , Duffin (thirteenth).'
