"CUTTING DOWN EXPENSES"

10 THE EDITOR.

Sir, —We are all, indeed, very pleased to hear of the safe return from the Old Country of the Rt. Hon. Mr. Massey and Sir J. G. Wa.rd. But, alas! lam afraid that during their absence they have not heard all the news. I wonder if they have been told of the curtailment of our railways _ time-table. But we'don't mind this time. A special train now and then won't matter, for I really forget if the Auckland .mail train leaves that end on Mondays. Sir, does the Prime Minister of England have "special trains"? I am afraid not.

I regret taking up your valuable space, Mr. Editor, but we are •' cutting down expenses, and I am very much afraid they, both have lost the one most important lesson.they learnt in the Old Country of "economy."—l am, etc.,. ECONOMY. I 27th June. , [We understand that the ordinary i Auckland-Wellington express on Monday | night was filled to its utmost capacity. There were four Ministers and their staffs to be accommodated, together with the luggage that the two returning Ministers had • brought back, and an extra train was considered an (absolute necessity. The extra train was used for the purposes of local, traffic'as far as it .could, possibly.be arranged, and, it is claimed, served a very., uspful purpose for a considerable distance.]
