The heavy demand that has been placed on the Pacific Cable Service during the war was mentioned recently by Mr. D. Cuthbert, superintendent for the board in Auckland. He said the board's cables were working continuously day and night, SundayJs included, the traffic having increased threefold since the war commenced. The staffs at the various stations had been depleted by 14 per cent, by enlistment. Auckland was now the principal training station for operators, and the local -superintendent I had to supply operators for Suvn, Fanning Island, and Canada. "Cable operating, is very different from land-line workI ing," said Mr. Cuthbert, "and as the cables are always working at their highest speed only experienced men on fill the most important positions. ' An average of abont 50 words per minute night and day, Sunday included, are signalled to or from the Auckland office, which transmits all the cable work, via the Pacific route, between Australia and Great Britain." \ The hearing of the action brought by Robert Angell against Johnston, Sons, and Co., to recover £308 14s as commission on sale of "Cassell's History of the War" was concluded at' the Supreme Court to-day. The case was heaid byMr. Justice Hosking and a jury of four. Mr. A.' W. Blair appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. P. J. o'Rega.n for the defendant company. The following issue was put to the jnry :—Was the agreement between the parties that the plaintiff should receive commission as if eight volumes were ordered on delivery of the first four volumes?
