Surprise Bag Day is to be held in Wellington on Friday next. On that day will be sold bags," containing exceptional gifts, at the price of one shilling each. An admirable collection of articles' has been made as the result of the energetic work-of the promoters, and purchasers may rely on receiving value for their expenditure, as well as contributing to the fund for our sick and wounded soldiers. Among the gifts to be won is .a section of land, donated by the Conlin Estate Company, while a gas cooker (presented by the Wellington Gas Company), travelling rugs, cameras, electroplate ware, etc., must also be added to the list of prizes to be secured by those who invest a shilling. In some of the bags, too, are gifts of money, in notes, gold, and silver', s> that it vrfli be seen that purchasers are being offered exceptionally good returns. Much interest is being shown in Surprise Bag Day, and it is confidently anticipated that the results will ■well reward the promoters in their efforts on behalf of the boys.

The' golden wedding anniversary of Captain and Mrs. Newby, of Crummerroad-, ■ Grey Lynn (Auckland) was of more than ordinary interest in that the husband was one of the many volunteers from Great Britain who helped Garibaldi in his fight for Italian freedom against the domination of Austria. The captain has lived to see Great Britain and Italy fighting against the same_ foe. Captain Newby was born in Cambridgeshire, England, and when Garibaldi's Legion was disbanded in Italy, he came to New Zealand, and resided first in Auckland. Later, he married at Whangarei, and afterwards was mining at Thames. For the last ten years Captain and Mrs. Newby have resided in Auckland.
