WEATHER CLEARS IN OTAGO

RIVERS FALLING.

DUNEDIN, 29th May

The weather cleared early this morning, and has been splendid since. Advices from East Taieri state that the water fell rapidly, but the lower portion of the plain is as bad as ever. Several residents of Momona had to vacate their houses last night. The Outram railway line is still under water, and- there is not likely to be any traffic for some clays. The river is falling at Balclutha, but the lower part of the town is still flooded, and much damage, has been done. i • ' „

The Railway Department will ( run trains to Mosgiel to-morrow,, but passengers for further south will have to proceed by road to Titree, a distance of^ fifteen miles, where there will be a connecting train. The Lawrence branch line is clear, but the Tapanui and Glenham branches will probably be blocked for some days. The road between Henley Station and the Main South-road is four feet under water to-night. The Kaitangata • private line is badly damaged.

GORE, 29th May. The Mataura River is still high, but is falling. The water in the town streets is., receding, though it is. still about eight inches deep in the lower-ly-ing cross streets. It is expected to drain away by the morning. Reports from Garston and the head' waters of the Mataura state that the river is falling. But little damage has been done to the town of Mataura. ''It is anticipated that the electric current will be restored on Saturday. Amongst various stock losses, Messrs. Horrell Bros;, of Mandeville, lost 400 sheep.
