NO NEW DEVELOPMENTS
REPEAL OF CONSCRIPTION ACT
DEMANDED,
at TBWGIUPH.—PRESS iBSOOIAMOH.)
) WESTPOET, 9th April. There are no new developments COll-
ceroing the strike at the mines. The Easter holidays are usually taken on Monday and Tuesday, so it may not ba known until Wednesday whether the miners, or a section of them., intend to resume, work. It is ■understood that a meeting will be held' at Denniston tomorrow morning, but its purpose has not yet been disclosed. It is suggested that it may be to review the decision, previously arrived at, to cease -work. The miners wish, it to be understood that their decision, is.purely .an auticonscription resolution, being as follows :' "We, the members of the Denniston, Millerton, and Stockton Colleries' Industrial Union of Workers, enter our proi< test against the , Conscription Act by cessation of work, and demand the immediate reppl of the Act. We wish to' state that we have no quarrel with the companies whatever. In the present instance the issue is conscription alone, 1 and ■ nothing else, but the conscription strike haa nothing to do with the recent arrests, or the adverse decision of the appeal cases, nor is it the result of the failure of recent negotiations with the mine owners." [ ,The voting wast — i • For. Against. . Denmstan -^_.... 208 20 ! Millerton „ 204 30. Stockton ..... Unanimous ,: The watersiders at Westpbrt- held a . meeting this morning, but have no decision to make public.: It is understood that they have decided to continue ■ working pending a decision by the, federation.
