Hinemoa, which tame into Wellington for the Easter holidays, tailed this morning to continue her work at Somes Island, Pencarrow, Cape Campbell, Okuri. Point, and French Pass. Given fine weather she should reach Wellington on Friday or Saturday .next, and will subsequently return to Dunedin. to have'a set of oil engines fitted AN INTERESTING CASE Is a vessel which answers a wireless -call for assistance entitled, to remuneration? This question has been raised in connection with a Japanese steamer. In August, 1915, a British steamer went ashore in Bramble Bay, near Torres Straits, and her master Bent a. wireless to the harbourmaster, Thursday, Island, to the effect that the steamer was ashore and was resting quietly on a sand bank. Later on the same day, he wired: "Assistance at once, ship making water." The Japanese boat arrived at Goode Island and took, on board a Lloyd's surveyor and a pilot, and when the stranded steamer was reached it was found that the captain had. no" intention of abandoning his vessel, whereupon the Japanese steamer proceeded on her voyage. The stranded vessel was ultimately floated, and the Japanese owners claimed payment for the following expenses, as the same time stating that the master and crew should also be remunerated for their service:—Cost of cable, ,£l9 15s 6d; pilotage from Goode Island to Bramble Cay, £100; extra coal, 68- tons, at 16s s»d, £55 19s 2d; deviation and loss of time, two days at 1500 yen per day—3oQo yen, at 2s ljd, £31&155.
