The well-known sehoon■er Houto, which is due in Wellington on Wednesday next from Dunedin, is about to be fitted with a powerful set of twin engines, and the schooner Rachel Cohen has just been similarly equipped. These sailing vessels are very cheap to run, and aro doing excellent work. When there is wind, they scud along under sail t and when there is no wind the engines are started up, and the vessel plogs along at about six or seven knots. The schooner Eutoice, a well-known trader out of Wellington, is a good example of this. Her run is usually from Timarn to Wanganni, via Lyttelton and Wellington, ami she maintains this almost on schedule. If she leaves Lyttelton at a certain time, her arrival here, is fixed for so many hours later, and it jis seldom indeed that sho fails to appear on time THE MAPOUBIKA'S STOVEME»TS The Mapourika is to sail from Nelson at T o'clock to-night for-Picton and Wellington, and is due here at about 8 a.m. to-morrow. The departure of the i vessel for Picton, Nelson, Westport, and Greymouth has been, post-' poned from noon until 5 p.m. HONG KONG HARBOUR Extensive Improvements are on foot at Hong Kong, where the Government has approved a scheme for the reclamation of about 12,000,000 square feet of land at Kowloon Bay. These plans provide for a. new town- to be built on the reclaimed area opposite Kowloon Old City. This will have a grand "praya," 175 ft broad, extending along the sea front, for 8000 ft, from which will project fpnr piers, including a Government pier, capable of accommodating ocean-going vessels at all states of the tide.
