ENLISTMENT OF FOOD PRODUCERS
10 TUB EDHOS,
Sir,—The motion carried by the Advisory Board of the Patriotic Societies, and referred to in your issue to-day, certainly calls for-the attention of all well-wishers of New Zealand and the British Empire. I have not yet verified' Mr. Dougall's figures as to the serious falling off of area in crop for primary industries, and I think his estimate of over 50 per cent.' reduction must be somewhat exaggerated; at:]east,'l hope so. Whatever the cause of the reduced area under crops, it must be remedied. Otherwise we will certainly fall. into the error the Germans have made—that is,. by sacrificing everything, to the military side of the war, denude agriculture and pastoral industries of labour so that munitions may be made and soldiers provided, risk defeat by starvation. The Advisory Board of the Patriotic Relief Societies cannot be accused of pro-Germanism, and it is to be hoped the Government and Appeal Boards will consider the motion. —I am, etc.,
C. H. CHAPMAN.
