WAR PENSIONS
INCREASING LIABILITY.
During last week the War Pensions Board dealt with 97 new claims and 97 renewals. The net result of the week's work was 74 pensions added to the roll, representing an annual increased liability of £4811.
Of the 97 new claims 62 were from soldiers, who were granted four permanent pensions, 44 allowances, and 14 were declined. Of the remaining 35, from dependents, 20 were given pensions and eight allowances, and seven were declined.
Of the 97 renewals, 73 were continued for varying amounts (ten to be final); 18 were ordered to ceass forthwith; two were converted into pensions; and in four cases the board decided to adhere to its former decision.
Grand totals are as under :—
Soldiers : 976 pensions, 2913 allowances, 409 rejected, 4 adjourned, 19 on hand; total, 4321.
Dependents : 1970 pensions, 235 allowances, 228 declined, 11 adjourned, 39 on hand; total. 2483.
Annual liability : Soldiers, £51,709 ; average, £52. Wives and widows, £41,592; average, £97. Other dependents, £44,613; avenge, £28. Allowances. £176,041; average, £55. Making a. total of 6094 pensions, with an annual liability of £513,955. From this have to be deducted some 1000 pensioners, representing £50,000. reducing the total annual liability to £263,900.
