CONFEEENCE CONCLUDED

AUCKLAND, 23rd" February. The Industrial Corporation Confer- i ence was concluded to-day The following resolutions were carried : "That in view of the necessity for the closer co-operation of science and industry with a view to a quicker industrial reconstruction after the war, the Government be urged to give an early and' favourable consideration to the needfforr r placing at the disposal of the laboratories in the four centres a sum sufficient to enable scientific staffs to carryon investigations on behalf of the manu- . facturers who first obtain the recommen-i' dation of a local Industrial Association on such termsas may be decided." "That in view of the present restrictions .on., various industries due to the shortage : and subsequent high prices of commer- ■ cial timber and the practical certainty that these restrictions must be further increased owing to the rapid depletion of the native milling forests,. the Govern-.' ment be strongly urged to hasten provi-:, sion for a. scheme of afforestation: and conservation of timber trees which will.'.■ bo sufficient to provide fqr the imperavl tive needs of industries and national' life." . -•' ■••;::;..;:•:•"
The Conference recommended the early establishment of an Advisory Committee on Afforestation, either in conjunction' with the Lands Department or a separate organisation, but with definite powers of control to deal with the .matter on an economic basis. '■.,'..:
Officers. were elected as under :—Pre-. sident, Mr. F. J. Evans '(Wellington); secretary, Mr. H. F. • Allen (Wellington) ; the committee of . the Wellington Association to act as the executive." ■■
