LORD SALISBURY AND THE PHILISTINE.
Lord George Hamilton, in riis new "Parliamentary Reminiscences" (Murray) tells us the story of a. Hatfield dinner party, the late Lord Salisbury .ao host.
"A bumptious young man, very much up-to-date, was teasing his neighbour, an old-fashioned squire, whom Lord Salisbury highly appreciated. "The young man constantly referred to him as 'Philistine.'' At last the old gentleman testily replied: 'I don't know what you mean by_a Philistine?' " 'Don't you!' said Lord Salisbury. 'A Philistine is a gentleman who is annoyed by the jawbone o£ an ass.'"
