TRAIN PRECAUTIONS

i . i ..... TO .THE EDITOR. ' . . , !■■ Sir, —Close upon three weeks ago. a i young and promising youth endeavoured | to mount the 8.21 train at Petone ! while in motion, wikh the result that he I met with a serious accident. Now, Sir, j this is what I wish to point out to you: j After the accident the railway officials > at Petone placed two or tttree porters to ! see that no one boarded the train until ! same was at a standstill. This only, i however, lasted about three days, and I i (a regular traveller) can see other acci- ; dents happening unless some measures are j taken to force the young men from enter- ■• ing the train while in motion. Every I day the same thing now occurs, and I I' certainly think the railway officials should put a stop to this dangerous practice. I am referring to the first coach on the train, which is a smoking compartment set aside for business men, and I should like to know why these boys (they are nothing else) are allowed to travel in this compartment when there are others set aside for them to travel in. Perhaps the railway officials will make a note of these remarks, as I have often seen passengers standing when they could have had a seat in preference to .these boys, whom I consider are not entitled to travel in a smoker. May the officials also bear a great strain upon the opening of my letter, or otherwise other accidents are certain to occur. Thanking you for the space I have taken in your valuable paper.—l am, etc., 8.21 PETONE. 23rd February. '■
