CLERGY & CONSCRIPTION
MARIST BROTHERS OLD BOYS'
RESOLUTION.
At the fortnightly meeting of the Wellington Marist Brothers' Old Boys' Association, last night the following motion was passed unanimously: — "That in view of the facts (1) that over 500 members ol this association are now : fighting for the Empire, and (2) that amongst these men are Capt... A. J. Shout (whose valour at Gallipoli gained for Mm the_ Military Cross, the D.C.M;, and the Victoria Cross) and Lieut. Healy (who was awarded the Military Cross), this association considers itself entitled to express its opinion, and protests most emphatically against the clergy and religious brothers being compelled to serve in the Army, and further asserts that not one of the 500 men now serving would have volunteered if they had known that their spiritual leaders were to be called in military ballots. The association heartily endorses the recent action of His Grace Archbishop O'Shea in this connection, and pledges itself to render him all possible support."
