WELLINGTON'S ROADS
i TO mE EDITOft. Sir, —In last night's Evening Post I read a letter about the care of. horses, by "Common-Sense." This man evidently knows something about the state of Customhouse-quay, and Fairish-street. Now,, for instance, on Saturday the weather, was pretty hot. Well, on'that particular day I drove a lorry up there with barely half a ton on. On arriving at my destination I went to back my. lorry in. All went well-for a few minutes, but suddenly my <ack wheel got embedded*in this soft tar that "Com-mon-Sense" talks about. I tried for about thirty minutes to back my horse in, but it was of no avail, so I had to take my load off and wheel it' in on a truck, which took about .six times longer.
Now, Sir, I want to know if the City Council cannot do something in this matter, and fix up the bad roads before making reserves and plantations, which arc not needed in a hurry. . Another- road, is that in Waterloo-quay. The shingle and sand have been deposited there and left, with the result that a cart conies along, and the driver, unaware of the state of the'"road/drives right into it, with the same result as I mentioned before : he gets embedded, and is perhaps a couple, of houre getting out with his ,load, which may, have to be on a boat or train at a certain time, and if he is two hours late in all probability he will be shut out,. Now, Sir, if he is shut or»4, who gets the blame : the 1 driver or the City Council? The boss blames the man in charge of the cart, and if he happens to 1 have another accident ot a similar nature, the boss might say "Find another position," as is the case of a driver in this town who has had a couple of mishaps,' through no fault of his own. If the City Council were to fix up these roads before any other tiling that is not so •'mportant, I think not only the horse drivers but all other vehicle drivers in Wellington would be more than sati.-jfiorL— l sm, etc.,
