SWIMMING
NEXT SATURDAY'S CAR-NIVAL.
1 As the day set down for the New Zealand Schools Swimming Championships, which will be decided at the Xc Aro Baths on Saturday afternoon, draws near, the excitement. at the various city schools is growing more intense, and it is anticipated that some very close finishes will be seen. Next Saturday's carnival will be the first of its kind ever held in New Zealand, 'and enthusiasts hope that the public will niake it their business to see that such a commendable function becomes a recognised annual institution. In a country like New Zealand, swimming amongst the younger generation is of prime importance, and a carnival of tnis kind will do mucb to help the sport onward. Teams will be present from most of. the big swimming centres, from Auckland to Dunedin, and, besides the four big events, there will be the Duthie"'*Cup ■ competitions, in which a team of four boys from each school in Wellington will compete. The Trentham Gamp Band will provide music during the afternoon. If wet, the carnival will take .place in the Tepid Baths, Tasman-street.
