The Hon. J. Allen returned from Auckland yesterday. To-day he is opening the new Soldiers' Club ai, Trentham.

The Hon. Arthur Myers, Minister of Customs, Munitions and Supplies, has returned to Wellington from Auckland.

All-. J. B. Dolan lias been appointed by the Minister of Education to a seat on the Napier High School Board.

The Mayor of Christ-church (Mr. H. Holland), who came up to Wellington last week, returned to the South on Saturday.

Mr. L. M. Isitt, M.P., has been appointed to the Board of Governors of ■Canterbury College, vice Bishop Brodie, resigned.

Mr. E. ■V. Bevan (of the Wellington office of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Co.), who has been on holiday leave, resumed his duties this -morning.

Deep sympathy will be felt for Mr. R. Hosie, of Lcraud-street, who has Teceived advice that his son, Private W. G. Hosie, has been killed in action. Another of Mr. Hosie's sons was killed some time ago.

Captain John K. Davis, who is to command the .Antarctic ship Aurora on hor forthcoming voyage to the Ross Sea, in search of the marooned Shackleton. Expedition, left Wellington for the. South on Saturday evening.

Mi.'. James Watson, general inspector of the Standard Fire and Marine Insurance Co., Dunedin, has been appointed manager of the Auckland Branch, in succession to, Mr. Edmund Johnston, who takes up the position of the company's adviser in that city.

News lias been received by Mr. H. Poole, of Lower Hutt. of the death of his son, Frederick A. (Jack) Poole, previously reported wounded, who was killed in action in France on 15th September. He was well known in both Trentham and Wellington Post and Telegraph Departments:

The death occurred at Ashburton on Saturday of Mr. W. H. Collins, one of the oldest residents and business men of that town. Mr. Collins had been in business at Ashburton for 35 years, and as Mayor, borough councillor, and member of various boards controlling educational institutes, he had been closely connected with the progress of the place. He recently had a son killed in action in Franco.

Surgeon-Major Lempriere, of Melbourne, who came to New Zealand, lastweek in cha.rge of the returned soldiers by the Paloona, has been made the guest of the Government during his stay in the Dominion. He was a guest of honour at the Wellington Savage Club's final korero of the season on Saturday night. Ever since the war broke out he has been on the Commonwealth's three hospital ships.

Sergt. Lyall C. Garrett, fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Garrett, Onehunga, who was killed in action on 15th September, was a member of the 2nd Battalion, Canterbury Infantry, and left the Dominion in January last. He was 27 years of age, and was educated at the Auckland Grammar School. A keen athlete, he held the school record for 220 yards for many years. He joined the staff of Archibald Clark and Sons in 1906, and for the past three years represented that firm on the West Coast of the South Island.

Corpora 1 J. Noel Hayes, killed in action on 20lh September, was the son of Mr, John Hayes, late Inspecting Engineer to the Mines Department, Wellington. After attending the South Wellington School and the Wellington College, he joined the- Colonial Mutual Insurance Co.; at 'Wellington, and 'wua 'later transferred to Aucklaud. Subsequently ho joined the Auckland branch of the Guardian Assurance Co. He left New Zealand with.A Company, 4th Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and was on active service in Egypt before going to France. His people now reside in Christchurch.

The funeral of the late Mr. S. C. Lambert took place at Karori Cemetery on Saturday afternoon last, there being a large following of relatives and friends of the deceased. The principal mourners were : Messrs. S. E. and E. A. Lambert (nephews) and Messrs. W. and J. Brown (brothers-in-law). The pall-bearers were Messrs. Watson, Phillips, Rhodes, Paik, Williamson, aDd Houldsworth, of the Land and Income Tax Department, the office where the deceased was employed up to the time of his death. The Native Department was represented by Mr. Hackworth, Public Works by. Mr. Gv SniitJi, the .Lyall Bay Bowling Club (of which Mr. Lambert was a member) by Mr. W. H. Movrah (president of the club), and the whole of the members. Various sports bodies were also represented. The Rev. J. Shircr conducted the service at the graveside. Many wreaths were sent, among them being tokens from the Land and Income Tax Department, Lyall Bay Bowling Club, and Wellington Cricket Association. The deceased was the only brother of Mt William Lambert, late of Wellington, now residing in Auckland.
