RACIAL SAFEGUARDS
TO THE EDITOR. ■ Sir,—May I be allowed through your ■columns to enquire; whether it is .true that numbers of Hindus are finding their way into this country from Fiji and elsewhere; whether the authorities propose taking any steps in the matter, and if so when? I understand employment on farms and stations is now being found for them at very much lower rates of wages than those hitherto prevailing. Are the authorities aware of this and do they approve it? May I also be allowed to enquire if it is a fact that many of them are living with Maori women, and consequently a mixed and undesirable progeny is springing up 7 Are these' Hindus not liable, for military service if within the age? If so, what steps are the authorities taking to enrol them? It would be rather an anomaly, I consider, if, while the best of our young men are away fighting for their country, their places should be filled by Hindus, who are, generally speaking, of poor physique, .and destitute of morality", quite,different in every respect from the • Sikhs - who are fighting with us in Egypt and elsewhere. —I am, etc:, KEEP NEW ZEALAND WHITE. . 26th August. ..'■ .-'■'.
