PASSPORTS FOR SEAFARING MEN
FACILITIES WANTED.

AUCKLAND,* Ist September.. The Hon. G. W. Russell, replying to a deputation of representatives; of the shipping companies in regard to, permits to seamen, and engineers, said -that as far as his Department—lnternal Affairs —was concerned he would do everything possible to facilitate the granting of passports to bona fide seafaring men for the purpose of getting vessels away to sea,. He -warned the deputation that a large number of applications by men' to work as firemen and trimmers came from deliberate shirkers, and the Department had to investigate all applications carefully. He promised to suggest certain modifications of the regulations to make matters work more smoothly.
•News has been received by Mrs. F: M'Sweeney, who is on a visit to her sister, Madame Mueller, Island Bay, that her son, Edward K. M'Sweeney, of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, has been wounded. This is the second son who has been wounded. Louis Hector M'Sweeney, who left with the Main Body, received wounds while fighting in the trenches at Gallipoli.
