TfWQPORTANT PROGRESS ON SOMME FRONT The High Commissioner reports: — LONDON, 17th August. The French official report says :On the Somm& front, after a violent artillery preparation, our offensive made important gains. North of Maurepas our troops, in conjunction with the British, captured the enemy's trenches on a front of 1650 yards, reaching certain points on the Guillemont-Maurepas road. South of Maurepas, on a front of a mile and a-quarter and to a depth of a quarter of a mile, all the enemy's positions east of the Maurepa-s-Clery road, were occupied by our infantry, which inflicted severe losses on the enemy.
