HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT

The Department of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce has received the following cablegram, dated London, sth August, from tho High Commissioner for New Zealand. (Note. —Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot):— >

Meat.—There is no material change in the market. New Zealand mutton and lamb are in small supply, but there are good supplies of Home-killed mutton and English lamb. The hot weather is checking tho demand for meat. Argentine beef arrivals are very small, with prices hardening. There is no N.Z. ox beef on tho market, and there is a poor demand for secondary quality N.Z. cow beef. New Zealand mutton, B|d per lb; ewe mutton, Bid; Argentine mutton, 9|d; N.Z. lamb, 9£d; Argentine lamb, lid; N.Z. bull beef, hinds sjd, fores 4£d; N.Z. cow beef, hinds 5 9-16 d forea 4?d; Argentine chilled beef, hinds 12d, fores Bd.

Butter.—The market closed firm at the advance. Danish, salted, per cwt 182s to 186s; Irish creamery, salted 164s to 168s, unealted 166s to 168s; Canadian, 6alted 168s to 170s, unsalted 170s to 1725; New Zealand, salted 172s to/1765, unsalted 172s to 1765; Argentine, unsalted 166s to 168s.

Cheese.—The market is firmer. Canadian, white, per owt., 92s to 945; coloured, 92s to 945; good to fine quality white 90s to 91s. English cheddar, 102s to 106s. New Zealand': Stocks aire light. White, in small supply, 92s to 93s and occasionally 955; coloured, 92s to 945. At last August the estimated Canadian and States cheese stocks at London, Liverpool, and Bristol were 191,000 boxes, ag-ainst 332.000 at same time last year. . The estimated New Zealand cheese stocks at London and Bristol were 13,500 orates, against 7850 at same time lost year.

Hemp.—Manila: The market is firmer on' account of speculative operations. There is no trade demand. New Zealand : The market was rather more active during the last few days, and the demand is chiefly for afloat hemp, Government graded fair Manila, hemp, per ton, £51 10s; good fair New Zealand, £49; fair, £47. August-November shipment to United States: Government graded fair Manila £51, coarse £48 ss; good fair New Zealand £48 10s, fair £46 10s. The output of hemp at Manila for the week ending last Saturday was 14,000 bales. ■

Wheat—The market is firm owing to reports concerning crop damage in American spring wheat belt and Manitoba. Shipment in August: American 655, Canadian 60s, Argentine afloat 595.

Oats—(Mutilated word here), but prices are firm owing to scarcity of offers. Argentmo 31s, American 325.

Wool—Merino prices aro nominally unchanged, but the tone of the market is not so firm, Prices have slightly declined for all grades of fine crossbreds, but coarser sorts are unchanged.
