THE FRENCH OPERATIONS
FURTHER SUCCESS AT THTAIJ. MONT.
The High Commissioner reports:— LONDON, 6th August, 3.50 p.m. The French official report says: South of the Somme, two small operations allowed us to progress in the German trenches south-west of Estrees. North of the ALsne, an enemy surprise attack on our positions on the plateau of Vauclerc was checked under the cm-tain fixe of the artillery. On the right of ' the Meuee, in the course of combats we materially extended the ground captured north-west of Thiauraont work, and repulsed counter* attacks in the same region. In the region of Fleury, and in the sectors of Chapitre and Chenois, artil lerv fighting continues without infantry actions. ■ ■
During Saturday and Sunday our squadrons discharged 40 bombs in the region of Combles, 84 on the Noyon railway-station, 30 at Stenay and Sedan, 40 at Conflans, 60 at Metz-Sablons, and 50 on military establishments at Robach, north of Metz.
