At a recent 'meeting of the Tairawhiti Maori Land Board an interesting point cropped up when an application was made for a meeting of owners "of the Wai-o-hi-harore Block (says the. Gisborne Times). It appears that purchase money to the extent of £5649 in respect of ithis block is in the board's hands for payment to,.the owners. Some months ago the late Mr. Wi Pere proposed to donate £1000 of this amount to the Maori Patriotic Fund, and the proposal was subsequently enlarged to £2000. Objection, however, has since been raised •■ by some of the Native owners on the ground that they had practically no other property, and the proposal to call a meeting of owners was opposed at last -week's' meeting of the board. Captain W. Pitt, who appeared, ..with Lady Carroll and others, in support of the scheme, suggested that the whole sum of £5649 should be invested • and' the proceeds devoted to the fund until the end of the war. It appears, however, that legal difficulties exist, and regret was expressed that so laudable an object should possibly be blocked through lack of legislative authority.
