HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING

Matters of harbour administration were considered at a meeting of the board held last night. Mr. C. 15. Daniell occupied the chair, and other members present were: Messrs. M. Cohen, C. W. Jonea, J. G. Cobbe, A. H. Hindmarsh, M.P., A. M'Farlane, R. E. Sinclair, J. G. Harkness, AY, Cab)e) j. w _ M'Ewan, H. L. Nathan, R. A. Wright, M.P., R. Fletcher. M.P., and W. T. Hildreth.

The financial statement was as follows: Current account, credit balance, £48,803 9s 6d; imprest account, credit balance, £2341 9s; on fixed deposit £60,000. Payments authorised for payment totalled £20,658 2s sd.

WOOL AND HEMP SHIPMENTS,

In accordance with a recommendation from the Wharves and Accounts Committee it was decided to inform the Railway Department that the board will, for the coming season 1916-17, receive wool and hemp ex rail on the same lines as last year on the following conditions: That the Harbour Board will, as in the past, receive all wool other than that consigned to Messrs. Levin and Co., Ltd., .Kaiwarra. The board will work overtime discharging wool under the direction of the Railway Department (who will give an order in writing, signed by a responsible railway official, for attachment to overtime sheet), contingent on Jahour and space being available. On each occasion when overtime is worked in accordance with the preceding clause, the Railway Department is to pay to the Harbour Board- the full time of the wool clerk in charge, .also the full time of one tally clerk for each gang, and the full time of one storeman for each shed, where rail-borne wool is being taken in after ordinary working hours, and also to pay the difference between ordinary and overtime rates for all manual labour so employed. The Railway Department is to provide ample shunting facilities while such overtime is being Worked for the Department. The board will discharge approximately 80 wagons per day of eight hours for five days a week (exclusive of holidays) and a proportionately smaller number on Saturdays; for seven days after each wool sale this number to be reduced to 60 wagons per day. The Harbour Board is not to be bound rigidly to the number of wagons mentioned, but to use every endeavour to attain this result or better (contingent upon the Railway Department- having wagons and way-bill sheets at the respective sheds by 8 a.m. each day, and keeping sheds and sidings constantly supplied with wagons as required). The board's clerks will give a receipt to the Railway Department in the tally book in lieu of signing the railway sheets; the Department to pay not less than a half-hour's overtime for each board's clerk signing Up tally books after 5 p.m., and also not less than a half-hour's overtime to the storeman of the shed concerned.

The Railway Department is to use every endeavour to supply information regarding correct number of bales, and also consignees on the railway waybill sheets, and is to compensate the board for any loss of time caused through faulty or wrong information supplied on the railway sheets in question. Tho board will, as in the past, uncover all railway wagons, but the making-up of these covers and depositing them in the. wagons is to he carried out by the Railway Department's employees. Further, the board is to intimate to the Railway Department that only for this coming season (1916-17) will the board give the facilities now provided for town deliveries.
