The evening class of the above held a competition on Thursday on the V.M.C.A. range. There was a large attendance of members, and the' entries numbered 16. The shooting was of a, high standard, quite up to that shown by the afternoon class on. the previous day. The result was as follows:—Miss M'Gill (received 2), 49; Miss Wilson (received 2), 49. ■ In the shoot-off Miss M'Gill won with a score of 46 against Miss Wilson's 44. The best score of the evening was made by Miss Jenkim (scr.) 48. The competition was very close, 10 points covering the first 10 competitors. It is interesting to note that on comparison the afternoon class beat the evening class in the two matches, the former making 90 per cent, against the latter's 88 .per cent., taking the first seven competitors in each case. A match between the two classes is being arranged, when the contest will be very keen, not only from a teams' point of view, but to see who shall provide the •champion individual shot.

"It is reported that you are about to visit India," wrote Mark Twain in a letter to Kipling, recently published. "This has moved me to journey to that far country to unload from my conscience a debt long due to you. Years ago you came from India to Elmira to visit me. It has always been my purpose to return that visit and that great compliment some day. I shall arrive next January, and you must be ready to meet me. I shall come riding my ayah with- his tusks adorned with silver bells and ribbons, and escorted by a troop_ of native howdahs richly clad and mounted upon a herd of wild bungalows ; and you must be on hand with a few bottles of ghee, for' I shall be thirsty."
