"WOMEN AND WAR"

MISS PANKHURST'S LECTURE:

"Women and the War" was the title of a lecture delivered by Miss Adela Pankhurst in the Alexandra flail, last night. Mrs. Beck presided over an attentive audience. In the course of her remarks the speaker claimed that there wa.s little chance of the war being brought to an end by purely military, means, as from the military viewpoint a war of attrition might, gp on for ever. Consequently an attempt was made to end the present war by means of economic pressure; hence the naval blockade of Germany. But did they all realise that this meant pressurp on the weakest section of the nation, pressure on the women and children? Women, she claimed, had as great an interest in war, and were at least as much affected by the war as men, and were, therefore, equally entitle*} to a vote to say whether or not there should be war. Miss Pankhurst gave a vivid description of the horrors of war with modern weapons, especially in so far as they affect the women and children. She urged that if men were going to go on producing engines of war to destroy the human race, women had a compelling need to come forward and sa ; ve, the men from themselves.
