AUSTRIA'S BLOW AT ITALY
The total gain by the enemy after eight days' assault at Verdun is set down at three hundred yards. There is now a lull in the battle, but it is expected.to be followed ,with a resumption of the offensive^ The Daily News correspondent at Paris declares that the enemy assaults on Mort Homme ,were useless butchery, the German losses being set down at fifteen thousand. Germany reports that 85 per cent, of her wounded are fit to resume their places in the fighting line within the next nine months. The Bulgars who invaded Greece have taken over a number of forts built as protection against an invasion. The Bulgars are reported to be marching on the seaport of Kavala. Venezelist papers denounce the invasion, and there have been anti-Bulgarian demonstrations in Salonika, the Greek Premier being denounced and the !411ies cheered. The Italian centre has fallen back before the Austrians, but the. situation is satisfactory on the wings. The Whitsuntide holidays of the munition workers in England have been deferred until the end of June.
