GUINEA
Spanish Guinea, the fittle patch of neutral territory to which the Germans from the Cameroons have fled, was unknown to most of ns until we looked it up on the map the other day. Few geographical names havo in turn swollen and shrunk in importance as "Guinea" has. Originally this, or something like tin's, appears to have been tlie name of a forgotten little town and "kingdom" in ,thp Niger region, . Then the name expanded in European use to signify everything from I lie. coast opposite the Canaries to tjie boundary of ex-German South-West- Afriqa, and gave us not only the coin called after its gold and the guinea-fowl, but also, by a natural error, the "guinea-pig"-—really the Guiana pig from South America, Now those tiny fragments, thn Spanish, Portuguese, and French Guineas, alone preserve the name on the msp,. together ____ tbj^S^i'
