CONSPIRACY OF LAI-BACH
Laibach, in Carniola, which Italian airmen have raided, is a place against which Italian patriots with long meiricries might fairly bear a grudge. Here the reactionary Sovereigns and statesmen of Europe, headed ■by Mcttemich, assembled in 1821 to put down the various movements for freedom. They sent for King Ferdinand of Naplss, who was carrying on in a dangerously constitutional way. He obtained leave, to go from his subjects by taking a solemn oath to maintain the Constitution, but promptly informed the European Powers that this all went for nothing, and, gladly obeyed Metfrernich's repressive orders. Tho Congress of Lai bach also vetoed Greece's aspirations for liberty. " We have accomplished great and good things," said Mettemich when it was over.
