APPLE FAIR

EXHIBITION AT TOWN HALL.

The exhibition of fruit and apple fair to be held at the Town Hall next week should attract large audiences daily. It will show the solid basis upon which the industry is now based and the promise of rich returns to growers, and 'through them to the country as a whole, that shall be fulfilled when times become normal and adequate cargo space for export is available. The show will be opened by Hon. W'. D. S. MacDonald, Minister for Agriculture, on Tuesday afternoon. It was at .first intended to hold the fair at the great new auction hall belonging to Griffiths and Co., in Courtenay-place, which was placed at the disposal of the Fruit Growers' Federation free of charge, but which was found to be inadequate to contain all the fruit to be sent in. The Federation had for some years desired to make such a show to call attention to the importance of the fruit industry. The local Wellington-Moutere group of orchard owners took the matter in hand this year at the request of the Federation, and it promises to be a great success, especially for the various funds to which the proceeds are to be devoted. The City Council has generously placed the hall at the disposal of the promoters, and fruit has been coming in daily for the varous exhibits and for sale.

Fruit will be on sale and exhibition and in the latter division it is understood that there is very keen rivalry between districts, and notably between Nelson and Otago. Fruit will be shown also from Port Albert, Hawkes Bay, Canterbury, Gisborne, Timaru, and elsewhere. All money taken at the doors is to be devoted to whatever patriotic fund the City Council directs. The Mayoress, Mrs. J. P. Luke, has arranged the afternoon tea, profits of which will be given to the Lady Liverpool Fund for providing comforts for the, troops, and she has also arranged for the distribution of a book of 200 recipes for utilising the apple for food. Fruit sold will be delivered free in the city and suburbs. The larger part of the fruit shown will be for sale.
