INCIDENTS OF THE FIGHTING

CARMEN'S GALLANT WORK,

(TIMES iSD SYDNEY SUK SERVICES.)

LONDON, 4th May. The Dublin correspondent of The Times writes:—"One incident that is related in Sir John Maxwell's despatch occurred in a narrow street near the Four Courts before the'rebels opened hostilities. A handful of men were told off to convoy five ammunition wagons from the North Wall Railway Station to the Barracks at the other end of the city. In Charles-street the rebels fiercely attacked the convoy without warning. The five carmen coolly 'turned their wagons across the road, unharnessed the horses, and while the escort poured volleys into the rebels the wagons were formed into a miniature laager, where a gallant battle was fought. A party of lancers held the Aground against a continuous fusillade from the street corners and surrounding houses. Three officers were hit, but the men held on till reinforcements drove off the rebels.

On Thursday night the railway carmen' displayed wonderful courage and devotion in creeping through the rebel lines during the night time and returning with food.

Many wealthy people are ruined, and thousands of workers have been deprived of a livelihood.

, Priests who have interviewed prisoners were told by many that "the dirty Germans have sold us. They promised to come to our' help, and did not come." A German henceforward will be a synonymous term in Dublin for a cheat and a scoundrel.

"Republican" stamps were found ready for issue—printed in green and white, with orange pictures.

Upwards of three thousand rebels are prisoners in Dublin, mostly boys of eighteen, of wretched physique. Three minutes after one party was placed on board a ship every member of it was praying.
