DEFENDERS OF KUT
LORD KITCHENER'S TRIBUTE.
LONDON, sth May. Speaking in the House of Lords on the fall of Kut-el-Amara, Lord Kitchener said that the House could not fail to realise the 'tense strain which had been borne by the troops, who had been holding these posts for upwards of twenty weeks, under abnormal, climatic difficulties and restricted rations. "General Townshend's troops have the satisfaction of knowing that their comrades, Parliament, and the country knew that they did all that was possible to resist to the last." Lord Kitchener highly praised General Sir Percy Lake and General Gorringe.
[It was reported yesterday that Lord Kitchener, in the House of Lords, warmly eulogised General Townshend and the defenders of Kut-el-Amara. General Townshend's last message was as follows:—"We are pleased to know we have done our duty. We recognise that the situation was one of the fortunes of war. I thank you, General Gorringe, and all ranks of the Tigris force, for your great efforts to save us."]
