CALIFORNIAN AND ISLAND FRUIT

Yesterday's steamer from San Francisco, via Papeete and Rarotonga—the Maitai—brought a large consignment of Californian dried fruits. A large quantity was also brought by the Wairuna, while in addition the latter vessel had on board a consignment of oranges and lemons from California. Besides her cargo of dried fruit, the Maitai also brought about 5000 cases of bananas and tomatoes from Rarotonga. According to some of tbe Maitai's passengers there have been beneficial rains in the Cook Group recently, and, as far as the supply of fruit was concerned, the prospects seemed very bright indeed.
