EVERY EFFORT NEEDED

An address was given to a large gath-. ering of the Lyall Bay Branches (men's and women's) of the National Reserve last evening. The Seaside Picture Palace, in which the meeting was held, was filled. Mr. James Doyle, chairman, dwelt upon the necessity for the exertion of every possible effort to achieve victory, and urged that everyone should do his or her utmost to secure that end: The Lyall Bay Branch of the National Reserve had not, he said, received all the support tho National Reserve movement deserved. This was not due to want of patriotism, but to failure to realise the seriousness of the position, and the inimiuence of the danger. Ho asked specially for the support of the women's branftii, feeling sure that woman's influence would have valuable results. He begged mothers not to let their feelings overcome their judgment- and prevent their sons going to the front. The audience heartily applauded the speech, and several new members were enrolled. A picture performance followed and I was much enjoyed; and the audience | passed a vote of thanks toithe management for its generosity. A cheque, representing a good sum of money contributed, was handed to Mrs. Doyle for a relief fund.

Lientenant-Colonel G. H. Stewart (brother of Lieutenant Downie Stewart, M.P.), whose death at Lemnos from dysentery is announced, was 40 years of age. He was educated at Otago High School, and had been a resident of Crookstown for twenty years. He was president of the local Farmers' Union and a member of the Tuapeka- County Council. He left for the front in charge of tiie sth Reinforcements.
