CLERGYMEN & ENLISTMENT
ALLEGED THREATS.
QUESTION IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS.
(TIMES AND SIDKBI TON BEKTICBS.) (Received December 3, 8.20 a.m.) LONDON, 2nd December. In the House of Commons, Mr. Philip Snowden (Socialist) requested the prosecution of the Bishop of Salisbury (Dr. Ridgeway) on a charge of threatening clergymen enlisting with the loss of their livings. Mr. Snowden asked whether the Earl of Derby was canvassing the clergy. Mr. H. J. Tennant, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for War, replying, said enlisted clergy had been put in their proper age groups. He was not aware of the Church leaders' reported statements. The War Office was not disposed to act against those who believed that clergymen and nearly qualified medical men best served by remaining at home.
