A REQUEST DECLINED
The following is a copy of a telegram sent from Auckland by the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. J. P. Luke) to Mr. Lewis (secretary of the Patriotic Society) : —" Must decline your request. In my opinion, Great Britain will not lower her standard of diplomacy to treat with a self-appointed peace delegate of the Ford type. I am sure the Dominion's statesmen will keep aloof from your proposed meeting, and will scout the idea, that Britain and her Allies will permit our brave men in the trenches being approached in the manner threatened."
