PATRIOTIC FUNDS

THEIR FUTURE ADMINISTRATION.

Under the scheme set out in the War Funds Act, 1915, where a fund has been transferred to the War Funds Council I for administration, the recommendations of the transferring trustees as to the disposal of the funds will be taken into consideration by the council. In such districts which place their funds under the jurisdiction of the council, it is intended that local advisory committees shall be set up upon which the responsibility of the administration to a large extent will rest. The persons appointed will be either (a) members of local todies, or (b) other persons. This will enable the patriotic ladies of the various districts to take part. The duties of the patriotic committees will be to enquire as far as possible into cases where application is made for assistance, such as (a) assistance to the wives and children of soldiers whose allotment is not sufficient to keep their families in comfort; (b) assistance of parents who were wholly or partially dependent upon their soldier sons before they went td the war. More particularly the cases that will need enquiry will be those of returned soldiers who are either temporarily or permanently sick or disabled, with the view of assisting their speedy return to health, or supplementing any pension they might receive, or assisting them to employment, or to establish them in suitable businesses or even to take up small farms. Other cases will be the assistance of soldiers either discharged or still in the service on sick leave—to give them railway journeys to recoup their health, or to reach Rotorua or Hanmer for attendance at the convalescent camps at those places. The suggestion is that from the Local Advisory Committees in any district covered by a patriotic committee there should be elected an executive, which should meet at the central town of the. district from timo^e time and be the medium of communication between the district and 'the War Funds Council.
