NATIONAL RESERVE

♦ - — The Miramar Branch of the Reserve, under Major Townsend, paraded at the locai Town Hall this week. There was a good muster and much useful work was accomplished. During the evening a surprise visit of inspection was made by Major Davis and Captain H. N. M'Leod (District Adjutant), of the Headquarters Staff. After inspection the men were put through various movements, including rifle exercises and physical drill, by their instructor, Lieutenant Nimmo. _ Major Davis expressed his gratification at the manner in which the work was carried out, and complimented Ma;or Townsend upon the efficiency of his command. After parade Lieutenant Nimmo devoted half an hour to the instruction of the special squad which is practising for a display of the " M'Laglen Bayonet Fighting " system at the coming demonstration on Seatoun Park. The Centra] Branch of the National Reserve held their weekly parade at Kelburn Park, and, with the Thorndon Branch, were put through platoon movements. Major Newton was in command, and other officers present were : Captain Bowles, Lieuienants Williams, Mohr, and Almao. The shooting range was opened on Thursday, the 14th inst., Captain Bowies firing the first shot. Some good scores were registered. The thanks of the platoon are due to Private Hempton for the work he has done to enable the branch to possess such a fine range. Sergeant Kean is instructor, and the committee hopes that members will make every effort to become efficient shots.
